If you are anything like me, the winter months can be a bit of a struggle.
Cold, short days and dark evenings can make life a bit gloomy at the best of times. Although I appreciate each season and all they have to offer, I much prefer the warmth and new life of Spring and Summer️️
Did you know that SAD, or seasonal affective disorder, is a recognised medical term linked to less sunlight during those dark winter months?
It's suggested that the lack of natural sunlight might stop a part of our brain from working as it should. This in turn can affect:
Production of Melatonin (increased production of this can make you feel tired and sleepy)
Serotonin levels (lower serotonin levels can be linked to depression and feeling low)
Circadian rhythm aka. body clock (reduced levels of light in the winter can disrupt your rhythm)⏲️
If you can, try and get your body moving and soak up as much natural sunlight as possible (easier said than done in the UK!) Talk to friends about how you are feeling and always know that you can speak to a professional if needed.
️There are also special lamps/ light boxes that help to simulate sunlight exposure️.
