I saw a Little Owl the other day and I am too chuffed not to share with you all!🦉
The above pic was taken with my phone through a binocula lense (thanks jscragg and lisa)(I'm quite impressd with the result as v cold + numb hands!)🤳
The Little Owl, pictured above, was introduced to the UK in the 19th century. They eat the likes of small mammals, beetles and worms (hence lots of earth in their pellets).. look below to see the lil owl pellets!
What are Owl Pellets?
🦉They are undigested parts of bird's food (hair, bones) that are regurgitated.
🦉They don't pass through the intestines and are not the same as droppings- making them easy to work with and have no odour as a bonus!
🦉Barn owl pellets can contain the remains of 4-5 small mammals
But why would we want to look?
🦉Pellets can tell you exactly what an owl has eaten and suggest hunting habits.
🦉We can learn about food chains and prey numbers.
🦉We can form a better idea of where different small mammals are found in an area.
*Reminder that baby owls are referred to as "Owlets" awwww
